Großräschen/Hamburg, June 29, 2026. VTG will discontinue operations at the workshop for intermodal rail freight wagons in Großräschen as of December 31, 2026. The employees at the site were personally informed as part of an internal event.
The decision was preceded by an intensive review of various options for the site. The workshop was planned and built during a phase of high demand in the intermodal market and began operations in 2024. However, the expected utilization and economic outlook for sustainable operation of the site have not materialized to the required extent against the backdrop of changing market conditions.
“The decision to close the workshop in Großräschen was extremely difficult for us,” says Thomas Jäger, CEO Production at VTG. “We know what this news means for the affected colleagues. Precisely because the site was established with great expectations, considerable commitment, and a clear sustainability ambition, this step is particularly painful. After careful review, however, we must conclude that economically viable continued operation is not possible under the current and foreseeable market conditions.”
The closure will affect the employment relationships of the employees at the Großräschen site. Maintenance of the VTG rail freight wagon fleet will continue without restriction and will in the future be ensured via VTG’s established European workshop network as well as through external partners.
